IBIS (Islanders Board of Industry and Service) has again proven itself to be an industry leader across several dimensions by winning the 2012 Premier's Reconciliation Award Business Category at the gala function on the 29 May in Brisbane.

The award prompted IBIS CEO Ian Copeland to say: “I am delighted with the result, as it recognised we aren’t just saying it, we are doing it when it comes to 'closing the gap'.”

The award was based on IBIS's Social Responsibility Project that has been operating for about two years, with several initiatives introduced into the company's operations.

The award said in part: “. . . The project has directly improved the quality of life for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in these communities through training and employment, healthier food-supply options, and the provision of a 'cleaner and greener' community environment.”

Being a finalist lays testimony to the commitment of work undertaken to identify, develop, reward and support the talents of staff. The awards evening was held on the 31 May in Brisbane.

IBIS was once again recognised for its achievements and in particular commitment to healthy communities through being named 2011 winner in the Workforce Innovations Award Category: Excellence in Workforce Achievement in a Regional and Remote Setting.

As the main provider of food supplies into the Torres Strait and the Northern Peninsula Area IBIS recognised its capability to contribute to the health status of each community it serves, through the incorporation of a secondary business focus into its operations, by building the capacity of staff to effect improved health status for not only other staff but to a larger degree the community they serve.
